Start with Graceling (a girl with a special ability to fight goes on a quest that includes an unexpected princess rescue and a villain who gaslights on a kingdom-wide scale), or with Fire (the prequel to the previous, where I started reading, about a girl with great beauty and great power (and whose father corrupted the previous king) who has to rebuild trust and help stop two separate power-seeking forces).
